DETAIL SPECIFICATION SHEET
MARKING MATERIALS AND MARKERS, ADHESIVE, ELASTOMERIC,
PIGMENTED: LETTERS AND NUMERALS
This specification is approved for use by all
Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense.
The requirements for acquiring the product described herein shall consist of this specification sheet and
MIL-
DTL-43719.
REQUIREMENTS:
Materials. Letters and numerals shall be made from marking material, liner, and when specified in the contract
or order (see 6.2 of the general specification), translucent transfer sheet, all conforming to requirements
specified in MIL-DTL-43719.
Construction. Letters and numerals shall be unmounted or mounted, as specified in the contract or order.
(Note: In the trade, "unmounted" is also known as "cutout", and "mounted" as "pre-spaced" and "individually
pre-spaced".)
Unmounted. Unmounted letters and numerals shall be cut to shape and shall be made from a layer of
elastomeric marking material with a protecting liner on the adhesive side. All edges shall be cut smooth.
Unless otherwise specified in the contract or order, the letters and numerals shall be in heights, dimensions,
and configurations of Series C Alphabet per Standard Highway Signs (SHS) 2004 Edition. Letters and
numerals in other heights shall be identical to Alphabet C in configuration, and the dimensions shall be scaled
in direct proportion. When specified in the contract or order, letters and numerals shall be covered on their
face side with translucent transfer sheet, die-cut flush with the edges of the letters and numerals.
Mounted. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or order (see ordering data), mounted letters and
numerals shall consist of letters and numerals cut from elastomeric marking material in the heights,
dimensions and configuration C Standard Alphabet, with each letter mounted on a rectangular liner and
covered on its face side with a matching rectangular, translucent transfer sheet. All edges shall be cut smooth.
The liner shall not be cut completely through at the outline of letters and numerals, nor shall it be cut so deep
as to interfere with it ready removal from the marker or to result in distortion of the marker when removal is
attempted. Notches, punch holes, slits, or other cuts in the rectangles will be permissible, provided the
quantity and type are limited so that the resulting mounts are compatible in use with solid rectangular mounts.
This allows no protuberances beyond the specified rectangular dimensions. For Series C standard Alphabet,
the rectangles shall be in the size shown in table I. The letter and number characters shall be centrally located
in the rectangles.
