DETAIL SPECIFICATION SHEET
MARKING MATERIALS AND MARKERS, ADHESIVE, ELASTOMERIC,
PIGMENTED; LEGENDS
This specification is approved for use by all
Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense.
The requirements for acquiring the product described herein shall consist of this specification sheet and
MIL-DTL-43719.
REQUIREMENTS:
Classification. Legend markers shall be of the following style, as specified:
Style A - Cutout legend
Style B - Printed legend
Materials. Legend markers shall be made from marking material, liner, and when specified (see 6.2 of general
specification), translucent transfer sheet, all conforming to requirements specified in MIL-DTL-43719. Ink(s) for
type II markers shall be compatible with the specified marking material. When tested as in the general
specification, the printed marking materials shall meet the performance requirements of the general specification.
Lettering. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or order, the heights, dimensions, and configurations of the
letters and numerals of the legend, and the spacing between letters, shall be as specified for Series C Alphabet
per Standard Highway Signs (SHS) 2004 Edition. One inch high letters and numerals shall be half-scale of the 2
inch size therein.
Space between words. The space between words, measured horizontally from the extreme right edge of the
letter preceding the space to the extreme left edge of the letter following, shall generally be 75% of the letter
height. This space may be reduced or increased where needed to obtain a more symmetrical appearance for
easy and natural reading, for example, where an L is followed by a J, or where an H is followed by an I.
Construction.
Style A. Cutout legend markers shall consist of a legend of letters or numerals or a combination thereof, cut
from marking material, each letter and numeral mounted in line on a single, rectangular liner, and covered with a
single, rectangular, translucent transfer sheet. All edges shall be cut smooth. The liner shall not be cut
completely through at the outline of letters and numerals, nor shall it be cut so deep as to interfere with its ready
removal from the marker or to result in distortion of the marker when removal is attempted.
Style B. Printed legend markers shall consist of a legend, instructions, notice or other written material printed on
a sheet of marking material of specified dimensions, type, class, and color (see 6.2 of general specification).
The written material shall have the content, arrangement, letter, size(s), and color as specified in the contract or
order. After printing, the entire marker shall be given a clear overcoating to produce a final finish of uniform
appearance and of the specified gloss (see ordering data). When specified (see 6.2 of the general specification),
the marker shall be covered on the face side with translucent transfer sheet.
